Hurricane Katrina and Some Crazy Politics
Well, I went on a small rant in the comments of the PilotsWorld blog the other day. And today I'm going to follow up on some of my comments. I have a bit more info which I think will clarify things a bit more.
I made some comments about the media. I stand by the fact that I think some of the news media are simply sucking this for all they can. They are continuing with their tactics of reporting the worst possible stories they can find. I think by this point, there should be a lot more focus on the good Americans have done in the aftermath of Katrina...the aid workers who have volunteered their time and the people who have opened their homes. However, the more I watch the media, the more I see them stepping up and doing what I feel the media is here to do. They are letting the American people, and the world community, know what is truly going on in that disaster area. Reporters are calling the government on the discrepancies between what the government is saying and what is actually happening. Those who are there and not simply standing by and writing on their pads. While they are reporting their stories, they are ensuring that accountability is there. This is something that I fell is often missing with the US government...accountability. And without accountability, what legitimacy does the government have? The point of FEMA is to be ready in case of disasater, but they weren't. They did not mobilize and people died due to this. And the media are informing the public about this so that in the future, this is never repeated. I just finished watching a small piece where Ted Koppel is talking to the head of FEMA and he really calls him out on a lot of issues. I invite everyone to watch it, it can be accessed at this webpage:
Ted Koppel InterviewI used QuickTime to watch it...I don't know if something else will work, but if nothing else does, just download quicktime or look for the interview elsewhere on the internet.
I think my respect for the majority of the US media has gone up a few notches due to the coverage of Katrina. Obviously not all network and reporters are stepping up to this challenge, but those who are, are making an impact and people are noticing. I definitely am.
